I'm trying something I've never done; using TransTint dye solution.

I'm trying to get a dark (almost black) color w/ a burgandy hue over some soft maple. Now I'm $40 deep in this stuff and would rather not waste it.

My first question is, w/out mixing up a ton of it, does anyone have a good method for making small sample colors? It says use 2oz to 2qts of denatured alchohol.

I guess my second question would be, anyone got any good tips or precautions before I do it? I've read a lot about it but would love to hear first hand from someone that's used it. I have a bit of experience w/ staining and finishing; just never used dyes before. Most of my experience is w/ either gel stain or oil based stain and I prefer Old Masters. For the most part, I finish w/ polyurethane but I've also used quite a bit of water based finish; just depends on the customer's desired finished look.

My third question is, do I use a prestain prior to using the dye solution still?

I have been thinking about the possibilities of building a spec home with a couple of friend. These are very longtime friends and we are very well matched personality, lifestyle and priorities.

One of them is a recently retired union carpenter, plenty of steam left as he is only 50 the other a finish carpenter who has worked on the the full range but mostly very high end homes for leading NFL sports figures.

Would like to build a starter home built with top quality products and energy efficient utilities etc.

We have about 400,000.00 of working capital.

Thanks

This will be my 1st time using this site, and I love the info that you people share.
I live in PA and have been a union insulator for over 30 years. I have a commercial and industrial insulation company and have never done residential work. We are considering the home insulation market. I was hoping that someone can give me a feel for the market in the northeastern states. The state of the economy is certainly what drives this concern. I have used almost every type of insulation and have a pretty good understanding of how insulation systems work. I just need some idea as to the current climate in this market.

Sorry but I'm am not even sure how to check back for your answer so my respond time my be delayed.

Hey thanks

To be honest, I've only built a couple things out of cedar,I've mostly done framing in the past, but I seem to be getting more and more into decks.

As I move ahead with business, I am trying to become very well versed in the different types of materials available.

Have you guys noticed a decline in quality of cedar?

Thanks.
